When Success Feels Like Sin

“Woman in black suit sitting in car, reflecting on success and faith.”

I’ve struggled with this for a long time — the fear that wanting success somehow made me greedy or “worldly.” That if I prayed for prosperity or envisioned abundance, I was stepping into pride instead of purpose.

It’s something a lot of “churchy” people planted deep in me — this belief that being humble means being broke, that struggle somehow equals holiness. But when I started really reading the Word for myself, I realized that’s not what God said at all.

The Bible says “A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children.” (Proverbs 13:22)
And I couldn’t shake that. Because how can we leave anything for our children’s children if we keep living in fear of money and success? And I get it, some of you may be thinking “That verse isn’t just about money- it’s about legacy, wisdom, stability, and the fruit of purpose.” I totally agree! But yes, financial health is part of that picture.

So, how can we build a legacy if we keep apologizing for wanting more? Well, we have to stop believing the generational lies.

The Lie About “Too Much”

“Open Bible with greenery symbolizing faith and balance.”

Somewhere along the way, we started believing that success automatically means selfishness — that money corrupts, and that ambition equals pride. But the truth is, it’s not about how much you have, it’s about what has you.

When your success comes from service, from love, from wanting to build something that blesses others — that’s not greed. That’s stewardship. That’s purpose in motion. See, I’ve spent too much time with people who said wanting success meant being greedy — that chasing money was “worldly.”
But lately, I’ve been asking myself… how can I leave a legacy for my children’s children if I’m afraid of abundance?

The Bible says we’re meant to be good stewards — to multiply what God gives us, not bury it out of fear. Maybe the real sin isn’t wanting success… maybe it’s hiding from our calling because we were taught to feel guilty for it. I don’t want to pass down fear around money and success — I want to pass down faith, purpose, and freedom.
Because building something that lasts isn’t greed — it’s gratitude in motion.

The enemy loves to twist good desires into guilt. He’ll whisper, “You’re getting too big for your faith,” when really, you’re just finally walking in the fullness of what God made you capable of.

🌾 Breaking Generational Fear

“Person walking forward in faith, breaking generational fear".

I’ve seen how fear around money passes down like a family recipe.
We learn it from our parents, and they learned it from theirs. “Don’t talk about money.” “Don’t aim too high.” “Don’t get too proud.” “You have big dreams kid.”

But that mindset keeps families stuck.
And I’ve decided — that cycle ends with me.

Because fear doesn’t feed our children. Faith does.
And I want my kids — and their kids — to see that you can love God deeply and live abundantly. That you can have peace and prosperity. That it’s not one or the other.

💛 Living in Purpose

"Faith-driven entrepreneur embracing success."

For me, success isn’t about showing off. It’s about showing what’s possible when you walk with faith and courage.
It’s about building something strong enough to outlive me — something that blesses my community, my family, and whoever comes after me.

So no, I don’t believe it’s greedy to want success.
I think it’s actually a form of worship — to use every gift, every opportunity, and every ounce of purpose God placed in me.

Because when we live in fear, we hide the light He gave us.
And when we live in purpose, we pass that light on for generations to come.

Maybe the real sin isn’t wanting success… maybe it’s refusing to grow into the person God designed you to be.
